Frequently Asked Questions

My 3 month old baby has been diagnosed with hernia, does it require Surgery and if yes at what age?

Yes, Hernia can be treated only by surgery. We recommend repair of all groin hernias regardless of age. Inguinal hernia repair surgery is a safe and common procedure. The surgery is usually an outpatient procedure for children older than three months of age. After surgery, your child will go to the recovery room. Most children go home on the same day. Some young babies, particularly if premature, will be watched overnight in the hospital after surgery.

How long can I wait for normal descent of testis in to the scrotum of my child with undescended testis on one side?

Usually the testicles will descend by the age of one year without any help. If they do not, the child should be examined by Pediatric Surgeon and recent research now suggests that surgery should be done early, rather than later, to prevent infertility. The surgery is called orchiopexy.

How will I know if my child has urinary tract infection?

The symptoms of urinary tract infection in children depend on the child’s age. In infants, parents may notice irritability, lethargy, unexplained fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, refusal to feed and failure to thrive. Since these are generalized symptoms in most infants, the only way the physician can determine if the infant has a UTI is by taking a urine culture. In order children, a UTI is suspected if the child complains of fever, burning with urination, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal pain, and back pain.

When should I see a Pediatric Urologist for urinary tract infection in my baby?

You should seek a surgical opinion, if a child is getting recurrent attacks of urinary tract infection or there is any evidence of abnormality on ultrasound, to rule out any urological abnormalities. Delay in treatment of febrile UTI or recurrent febrile UTI may lead to renal scarring, hypertension and renal failure.

What are the symptoms in urinary tract infection which need further investigations and Pediatric urological consultation?

If your child has any of the following symptoms along with UTI, then he needs evaluation to prevent further kidney damage. Poor urinary stream, dribbling of urine, prolonged retention of urine, bed wetting, frequent passage of urine and recurrent UTI are red flag signs of underlying urological abnormality.

My 2 month old baby is having Green vomiting. Should I Be worried?

Yes your baby needs to be seen by a Pediatric surgeon immediately. Greenish (bile) vomiting in a baby is sign of blockage in intestines and needs immediate Pediatric surgical consultation. Timely diagnosis and intervention in such situation of paramount importance.

Will my child have pain after surgery?

Most surgery causes some pain. Some surgery is very minor and requires less pain medicine. Other surgery needs active care to treat pain. No matter what kind of surgery a child has, most postoperative pain can be prevented to make the child comfortable.
