About the Patient

A 45-year gentleman came to neurosurgery OPD with neck pain, severe Rt U/L pain and shoulder weakness. MRI was showing a large Rt Side disc prolapse with root compression at C5/6 level with disc changes at adjacent levels.

Case Scenario

After detailed discussion of the problem and treatment required, the patient opted for surgical decompression with the insistence that neck mobility must be maintained. Surgery was done next day anterior cervical discectomy and a motion pressuring artificial disc replacement was performed.

The pain improved and patient was discharged home on 3rd POD.

World-wide Scenario

The Usual treatment in such cases involves fusion surgery after the
discectomy, with bone/cage/plate fixation and immobilization in collar for 2-3 months.
.

Expertise at Apollomedics Hospital, Lucknow

This fusion surgery results in loss of neck movement at that level.
In the long term, there is development of ALD (Adjacent Level Disease).
Thus preserving motion at the discectomy level addresses both these
concerns.

We used a latest model Swiss manufactured artificial Disc, which provides
controlled motion in all six degrees with excellent fitment and lodging system to prevent displacement.
