Title: TAVI (Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation)- Attempted Successfully for the first time in a Private Hospital in Uttar Pradesh at Apollomedics Hospital, Lucknow by CTVS Surgeon Dr.Vijayant Devenraj
Date: 4th December 2020
Location: Apollo Hospital, Lucknow
Mrs.Ranjana Maurya, 71-years-old, presented to Dr. Vijayant Devenraj in Apollomedics, Lucknow, was extremely weak and was repeatedly passing out. After initial diagnosis, it was found that her aortic valve was shrunken due to which she was getting syncope (frequent dizziness). A situation where patient's aortic valve is contracted and the patient gets syncope is a critical situation and requires immediate operation. Open Heart surgery is not an option in such case where the patient's is old or patient's general physical condition is weak.
Nowadays, a state-of-the-art technology called TAVI (Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is available in which heart valve (Aortic valve) implantation is done without open heart surgery. In this technique, heart implantation of the aortic valve is done through footway (femoral route) with the help of a catheter. In this process, no incision is made in the body. A new valve is placed inside the contracted and corroded valve of the heart and the patient recovers very well.
Since Mrs. Ranjana Maurya was old and very weak, open heart surgery was not an option in her case. Therefore, she was given the option of TAVI and was also advised for physiotherapy. A few days later, she came back to Apollomedics Lucknow and underwent TAAVI successfully. Post operation, she stayed in the hospital under observation only for 5-6 days and was then discharged in a healthy state.
TAAVI has been successfully attempted for the first time in any Private Hospital in Northern India. This treatment is expensive and is done only under specific circumstances.
