20-Year-Old Male’s Life Saved by Quick-Thinking Doctors
20-year-old male came to ER with complaints of profuse bleeding from his right leg, he had a history of road traffic accidents and underwent multiple surgeries for a compound fracture right femur fixed initially with an external fixator followed by internal fixation with a femur nail. He presented in an emergency in shock with discharge from the surgical side, a tourniquet was tied and he was stabilised by ER team at Apollomedics. CT angio revealed a Pseudo aneurysm in the femoral artery which was bleeding.
Dr Ashutosh K Pandey – vascular surgeon- operated without delay and repaired his pseudo aneurysm. Immediately his blood pressure improved. He had good circulation in his legs in the post-op period. He was later taken up by the orthopaedics team for further fracture management.
Dr Kamal Kishore Gupta evaluated the patient clinically and diagnosed him as having an infected fracture femur with a nail in situ. The decision was made to do extensive debridement removal of nails and antibiotic cement placement with external fixator application was done in the same sitting. Post-surgery patient wound condition, as well as general condition, improved immediately.
A surgery in time saved his life and leg and now he is looking forward to walking again.
