Thyroid is a tiny gland found below the voice box in the lower front region of the neck. Hormones produced by the thyroid gland aid in the regulation of metabolism. It also aids in the efficient functioning of the body’s organs and the preservation of body heat. When the thyroid gland malfunctions and produces too many hormones, this can result in swelling; the formation of cysts or nodules, and other complications for this thyroid surgery is required. Increased body weight, hair loss, mood swings, constipation, blurred vision, muscle weakness, brittle nails, dryness, constipation, tingling, and even an enlarged neck are all common symptoms of thyroid disease.

How is the treatment done?

Thyroid surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Anesthesia is administered either liquid injection or gas through a mask, followed by the insertion of a breathing tube into the trachea to assist the patient in breathing. Throughout the process, many monitors are placed on the patient’s body to verify that the heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels remain at optimal ranges.

Your type of surgery depends upon the condition:

Total Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland.

A Hemi thyroidectomy is when one of your thyroid’s two lobes is removed.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The surgery’s outcome is determined on how much of the thyroid gland is removed. When a portion of the thyroid gland is removed, the remaining portion of the gland resume its activities. Hypothyroidism can develop if the entire thyroid gland is removed. In this instance, a person will need to take synthetic thyroid hormone medicine. As a result, it will be a lifelong endeavour.

How long does it take to recover?

Thyroid surgery usually has no major adverse effects and allows the patient to return to normal activities the next day. The patient may go home the same day as the surgery or the doctor may advise them to stay for the night. For a few days, a person may experience a sore throat. It can be readily remedied by taking some drugs.
